Following a week in which he led all of Major League Baseball in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and hits, James Wood was unanimously named National League Player of the Week on Monday. The announcement was made on MLB Network. This is Wood’s first Player of the Week award and the second MLB award won by a Nationals player this season after Nasim Nuñez won Play of the Week on March 30.
Wood, 23, went 12-for-22 (.545) with three doubles, three homers, eight RBI, six walks, two stolen bases and eight runs scored while hitting safely in all six games last week. He posted a .655 on-base percentage, a 1.091 slugging percentage and a 1.746 OPS along the way. Wood recorded four straight multi-hit efforts from April 6-10, helping the Nationals to a series sweep over the Milwaukee Brewers. Highlights from Wood’s impressive week of play include:
- On April 6 vs. St. Louis he robbed a home run in the second inning and hit a game-tying, three-run home run in the eighth inning.
- On April 8 vs. St. Louis, Wood recorded a 116.0 MPH single, and on April 10 at Milwaukee he laced a 116.3 MPH double. He is the only player in Major League Baseball with more than one batted ball greater than 116.0 MPH this season.
- On April 12 at Milwaukee, he became the first player in Nationals history (2005-pres.) to homer and steal home in the same game.
On the season, Wood ranks among National League hitters in extra-base hits (T2nd, 11), home runs (T2nd, 5), runs scored (T2nd, 14), total bases (T3rd, 38) RBI (T4th, 14), doubles (T5th, 6), slugging percentage (T6th, .613), OPS (7th, 1.005) and walks (T8th, 11).
