Following a week in which he led the National League in batting average, extra-base hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, runs scored, home runs and walks, James Wood was named National League Player of the Week on Monday. The announcement was made on MLB Network. This is Wood’s second Player of the Week award this season and the fourth MLB award won by a Nationals player this year after Wood (week of April 7) and Luis García Jr. (week of June 29) were each named Player of the Week and Nasim Nuñez won Play of the Week (week of March 30).

Wood, 23, went 10-for-20 (.500) with a double, five home runs, eight RBI, nine walks and 11 runs scored in six games from July 6-12.

Highlights of Wood’s week include:

  • Hit three leadoff home runs to give him a Major League-leading 10 on the season. His 10 leadoff homers are the most in a single season in franchise history (MON/WSH).
  • Scored a run in all six games, including four games with at least two. He now has a Major League-best 89 runs scored, 21 more than any other player. Per Elias Sports Bureau, it is the largest gap in runs scored between No. 1 and No. 2 at the All-Star break since the 19-run difference in 1946: Ted Williams (82) and Johnny Pesky (63).
  • Drew nine walks to take over the Major League-lead with 79 on the season.
  • Stole two bases to become the only player in Major League Baseball with 25 home runs and 15 stolen bases this season.

A National League All-Star for the second time, Wood enters the break leading Major League Baseball in extra-base hits (52), walks (79) and runs scored (89). He leads the National League in on-base percentage (.410), OPS (.985), slugging (.575) and total bases (212) and ranks in the NL in home runs (2nd, 28), doubles (4th, 23), hits (7th, 103) and RBI (7th, 64).
