Kelenic, Dunn, White named to AL roster for July 7 showcase

June 29th, 2019

HOUSTON -- While Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz have had some first-half struggles with the Mets, two of the youngsters acquired by the Mariners in that blockbuster deal last December were named Friday to the 2019 SiriusXM Futures All-Star Game.

Outfielder Jarred Kelenic and right-hander Justin Dunn are two of the Mariners' three representatives selected for the July 7 game that will be part of All-Star Week in Cleveland, along with 2017 first-round Draft pick Evan White.

The Mariners' three Futures selections equals their highest total in the 21-year history of the game, something they also achieved in 2013 with Taijuan Walker, Ji-Man Choi and Brad Miller and in '04 with Felix Hernandez, Jeremy Reed and Shin-Soo Choo.

The Futures Game format was changed this year to American and National League teams after previously having World and U.S. teams, so all three Mariners are on the same AL squad. Only four other teams -- the Tigers, Marlins, Padres and Rays -- have three players participating.

"I'm excited. We should have three," said Mariners manager Scott Servais. "We've got a good Minor League system and some guys that are having really good seasons. I totally expected Kelenic would make it, but great for Justin Dunn and Evan White. We probably had a few others that could have made it as well.

"We have a lot of positive things going on down on the farm, and we should. We traded a lot of good players away to get some good young players. I'm anxious for those guys to eventually get here."

Kelenic and Dunn are listed as Seattle's top two prospects by MLB Pipeline, while White is No. 5.

Kelenic, 19, was recently promoted to Class A Advanced Modesto, where he had a .250/.310/.462 line with two homers, eight RBIs and four stolen bases in his first 15 games. The youngster hit .309/.394/.586 with 11 homers, 29 RBIs and seven stolen bases in 50 games for Class A West Virginia prior to getting bumped up a level.

Dunn was the other prized prospect acquired from the Mets, and he's having an excellent year at Double-A Arkansas, where the 23-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 14 starts (70 1/3 innings).

Kelenic and Dunn were two of the five players acquired for Cano and Diaz. Cano has hit .222 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 57 games for the Mets, while Diaz has a 4.94 ERA and already equaled last year's total of four blown saves, in just 20 opportunities, after saving 57 of 61 chances with a 1.94 ERA last year for the Mariners.

White, 23, entered Friday on a 23-game hitting streak and had a 51-game line of .302/.363/.485 with nine home runs for Arkansas.

MLB Network will exclusively televise and MLB.com will live stream the Futures Game at 4 p.m. PT on July 7 from Progressive Field.
