Mariners No. 1 prospect among five Minor Leaguers recognized

SEATTLE -- The Mariners presented their Minor League Awards ahead of Friday's game against the A's, with No. 1 ranked prospect Jarred Kelenic receiving the Ken Griffey Jr. Hitter of the Year honors and No. 2 prospect Logan Gilbert taking home the Jamie Moyer Pitcher of the Year award.

Kelenic, MLB Pipeline's No. 14 overall prospect, has been delayed from starting the Arizona Fall League slate after having his wisdom teeth removed, but said he’ll begin playing for the Peoria Javelinas next week.

“I was ready a couple days ago, but they’re taking it really slow down there,” said the 20-year-old outfielder. “I’m not really sure when I’m going to get to play yet, but if I had to guess, at the latest I’d say [Wednesday].”

Kelenic finished the season at Double-A Arkansas, but he has visions of advancing to the Mariners as quickly as next season. Sitting at T-Mobile Park only helped whet that appetite.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said, looking around the field Friday. “Anytime I go to a big league stadium, this is where I want to be. I want to be here as soon as possible. It gets me really excited to hopefully get here next year and help the team out as much as I can.”

Gilbert has been with the Mariners this week along with Arkansas teammates Evan White and Cal Raleigh, getting the chance to absorb the MLB scene even though they’re not on the active roster. That gave him the chance to watch Félix Hernández's finale from the stands.

“It’s unbelievable, just what Félix has done his whole career and then, me trying to start up my Major League career here one day, just being able to see that and kind of dream upon it is pretty inspiring,” said the 22-year-old right-hander. “He’s done just about everything you can do as a Major League pitcher. That’s the kind of guy you want to look up to and to have him here with the Mariners, he’s the perfect role model.”

Also honored on Friday were infielder Joe Rizzo from Class A Advanced Modesto as the Alvin Davis “Mr. Mariner” Award winner for leadership, infielder Donnie Walton with the Dan Wilson Community Service Award, infielder Connor Hoover with the Edgar Martinez “Rake Report” Award and pitcher Penn Murfee with the "60 ft., 6-in Club” Award for controlling the strike zone.

Worth noting

• The Seattle chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association gave out its annual awards on Friday. was named Player of the Year, earned Pitcher of the Year and catcher Tom Murphy was the Unsung Hero.

• Second baseman Dee Gordon didn’t start for a second straight game since having his back stiffen in an outfield collision with Tim Lopes in Tuesday's loss to the Astros, but Mariners manager Scott Servais said that Gordon is fine and it was more a matter of giving younger players a chance in the closing games, with September callup Walton getting his first start at second base.
