J.D. Martinez named AL Player of Week

Tigers outfielder hit four homers, reached base 17 times

Due to a foot injury that forced him to miss the first month and a half, this week was essentially J.D. Martinez's first playing this season. Consider him 1-for-1 in American League Player of the Week honors.
Martinez was named the winner of the award on Monday following a seven-day stretch in which he helped carry the Tigers' slugging offense. Martinez went 7-for-18 (.389) with four home runs and nine RBIs, reaching base 17 times in a six-game stretch.
Martinez's massive week started with a monster game on Tuesday against the Orioles. The right fielder went 2-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs and four walks in Detroit's 13-11 extra-inning loss, including a go-ahead, opposite-field grand slam that erased a three-run deficit in the seventh.
2017 AL Players of the Week
Martinez homered again two days later, then a fourth time on Saturday against the Rangers. Martinez also walked 10 times last week. The Player of the Week honor is the third of Martinez's career, and first for a Tigers player since won the award for the final week of the 2016 regular season.
