Padres place Weeks on DL, recall Pirela

May 8th, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres' rash of injuries to their infielders required another roster move before Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Mets.
Jose Pirela was recalled from Triple-A El Paso, expected to see occasional starts at second base.
Jemile Weeks heads to the disabled list after straining his right hamstring in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Mets. Weeks, injured while trying to beat out a bunt, joins infielders Yangervis Solarte (hamstring), Cory Spangenberg (quad) and Alexi Amarista (hamstring) on the DL.

Amarista and Solarte could be returning soon. They traveled to the team's Arizona facility on Sunday and manager Andy Green anticipates them playing in games late next week.
Whether that's with the Padres or a Minor League affiliate will be determined.
"If they feel great and if we can bypass [Minor League games], we will do it,'' Green said. "But there is not a clear laid-out plan.''
Of the two, Green said Amarista is the "most likely to be pushed aggressively" in his return.
Pirela, a left fielder who was hitting .294, played one game at second base for El Paso. But Green noted that Pirela came up as an infielder and started 19 games at second for the Yankees last year.
"It's not like it's some experiment,'' Green said.
Even if it was, Green can't be blamed for embracing all options.
"Adam Rosales will play some second and third, too,'' Green said. "We'll work around with the infield mix until those other guys start getting healthy.''
That didn't prevent left-handed first baseman Alex Dickerson from tugging Green's arm. Just in case, Dickerson assured Green he could handle the middle infield.
"He told me he was pretty good in Poway [Calif.] Little League,'' Green said with a smile.
