Sloppy defense, quiet bats, rocky Luzardo: Phillies drop lackluster finale

PHILADELPHIA -- couldn’t believe the ball snuck over the left-field fence.

He couldn’t hide his frustration on the mound.

There was plenty to express, even after Andrew McCutchen’s three-run homer in the fourth inning of Texas’ 8-3 victory over the Phillies on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Luzardo allowed six runs in six innings, the most runs he had allowed since July 23 against the Red Sox.

But it was more than just one pitcher on Sunday. The Phillies again had a punchless offense and they looked sloppy on defense.

Sunday was the second consecutive game the Phillies’ offense did nothing early.

They were no-hit through 4 2/3 innings and had just one hit through 8 2/3 innings in Saturday’s 5-4 loss in 10 innings. They were no-hit through five innings on Sunday.

Center fielder Justin Crawford broke up MacKenzie Gore’s no-hit bid with a swinging bunt in the sixth that even the Phillies’ slowest-footed batter could have beaten out with Rangers third baseman Josh Jung positioned nearly at shortstop.

The Phils trailed, 6-0, at the time.

Gore loaded the bases with no outs for Bryce Harper, who struck out swinging on four pitches. He heard boos as he returned to the dugout. Gore then drilled Alec Bohm with a pitch to plate the Phillies’ first run. Adolis García’s sacrifice fly to left scored their second.

But that was it.

The Phils walked twice to start the seventh, but they did not score.

Meanwhile, Otto Kemp misplayed a couple of balls in left field. García lost a ball in the sun in right to allow a run to score in the sixth.

The Phillies open a three-game series on Monday night against the Nationals.
