PHILADELPHIA -- Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski might be the favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award, but Phillies left-hander Jesús Luzardo is making a hard push to finish in the top three.
He pitched brilliantly in Monday afternoon’s 1-0 victory over the Braves at Citizens Bank Park, pitching the first shutout of his career. Luzardo struck out 12. He walked only one.
It was a memorable effort that allowed the Phillies to split the four-game series against the Braves, who have a four-game lead over the Phils in the NL East with 18 games to play. Luzardo improved to 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA.
Kyle Schwarber’s solo home right to right field in the eighth inning proved to be the difference.
