Phils mourn loss of Jim Fregosi Jr.

December 10th, 2021

PHILADELPHIA -- The Fregosi family impacted the Phillies in so many ways over the years.

Jim Fregosi Sr. managed the Phillies from 1991-96, leading them to the National League pennant in 1993. Jim Fregosi Jr. worked with the organization for 17 years, spending his final three from 2009-11 as a Major League scout. Both men were revered because of their spirit, larger-than-life personalities and baseball acumen.

So it stunned the Phillies on Thursday to learn that Fregosi Jr. died unexpectedly at 57.

“The Phillies are saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Fregosi Jr.,” the team said in a statement. “Jim brought a passionate, fun-loving attitude to the Phillies' scouting department for 17 years, and made an equal impact on the club with his baseball acumen. Jim was a great friend and mentor to many and will be sorely missed. The Phillies’ thoughts and prayers are with the entire Fregosi family during this difficult time.”

Before Fregosi Jr. became a Major League scout following the 2008 season, he spent seven years as an amateur scouting coordinator for the Phillies. Fregosi was St. Louis’ second-round pick in the 1985 Draft. He played five Minor League seasons with the Cardinals before finishing his Minor League career with the Expos. He joined the Phillies in 1992, leaving temporarily to work with the Rockies from 1999-2000.

He joined the Royals following the 2011 season as a special assistant to the general manager.

Fregosi is survived by his wife, Mary, and their children: Jimmy, Katelyn and Joey.
