Hardy to rehab in Florida when O's hit road

May 12th, 2016

BALTIMORE -- When the Orioles complete their current homestand and head west to begin a road trip against the Angels on May 20, shortstop J.J. Hardy will travel to the club's spring complex in Sarasota, Fla.
Hardy, on the disabled list with a hairline fracture in his left foot, will continue his rehab there, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said on Thursday. There remains no exact timetable for when Hardy will get to remove the protective boot from his foot, although the initial target date was May 29.
Hardy suffered the injury fouling a ball off his foot on May 1 and was placed on the 15-day DL two days later. The 12-year veteran was batting .244/.291/.410 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 22 games this season, and Baltimore has moved third baseman Manny Machado over to shortstop in his absence.
Worth noting
• Right-hander Yovani Gallardo, on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis, will travel with the team on its road trip. Gallardo is scheduled to play catch on Saturday for the first time since he was sidelined.
• Showalter said that righty Hunter Harvey, the Orioles' top prospect, actually had two tears repaired when he underwent sports hernia surgery earlier this month.
