Bohringer promoted to assistant GM

Veteran of 30 years in pro ball will oversee analytics staff

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Joe Bohringer, a long-time scout who has spent the past 3 1/2 years as a special assistant to general manager Jerry Dipoto, was promoted Saturday to assistant general manager of the Mariners.

The 48-year-old replaces Jeff Kingston, who took a job with the Dodgers in December.

“We’re 10 days into Spring Training, so it’s really kind of just Groundhog Day with a new title,” said Bohringer, who will oversee the Mariners' analytics staff and new player development technology area, in addition to being the liaison between the front office and medical department.

Bohringer is beginning his 30th season in professional baseball, having worked in scouting for the Dodgers, Mariners and D-backs before becoming the Cubs' director of pro scouting from 2012-15. He rejoined the Mariners on Oct. 29, 2015, and now moves into a new role alongside Justin Hollander, the club’s other assistant GM.

Hollander will assist Dipoto in all areas of Major League operations, including travel, scheduling, budgeting, payroll, roster management, player procurement, negotiations of Major League contracts, 40-man roster composition and baseball statistical research.

Bohringer said baseball’s rapid analytical movement through TrackMan and Statcast data reminds him of the “Moneyball moment” in scouting, with new information now available to help front offices and players in decision-making processes.

His background helps him serve as a go-between with that information between different departments.

“A lot of it just in general the game is really trying to pull a lot of things together and I’ve just been really fortunate having worked in scouting, player development, had to chance to interact with coaches, players, trainers, front office executives,” he said. “I think the entire industry is trying to move toward tying information together and making it practical on the field.

“So to have spent a lot of years in those arenas, moving between departments, this is just a fit where they’ve asked me to coordinate and pull things together. As a special assistant, I was doing something very similar anyway. This is just a little more structured based on where the game is going right now.”
