Girardi on CC's beard: 'He did his job today'
Girardi on CC's beard: 'He did his job today'
March 8th, 2017
Bryan Hoch
TAMPA, Fla. -- Carsten Sabathia proudly showed off his cutter on Tuesday, but some eagle-eyed viewers have commented that he may now need to find a razor. Joe Girardi said that he did not spot the manicured beard that Sabathia sported while throwing two scoreless innings in New York's 7-6, 10-inning Grapefruit League victory over the Rays, but the Yankees' manager does not believe it was an issue. "I don't stare at him that close, I guess," Girardi said. "I don't know what to tell you. The most important thing here is that we win games. He did his job today. If I see it as a problem or someone calls me and says that it's a problem, I'll let him know. I didn't see it as a problem today."
Facial hair below the lip has been a no-no in the Yankees' universe since George M. Steinbrenner's purchase of the club in 1973. Hair has been a talking point in this camp, with outfield prospect Clint Frazier's curly red mop also drawing attention. Asked if he thought he needed to shave soon, Sabathia replied, "I don't know." He was then asked if he would wait until someone from the club told him to do so.
