Maddon: La Stella will need Triple-A at-bats

August 13th, 2016

CHICAGO -- , who refused to report to the Minor Leagues after he was optioned on July 28, continues to work out at home in New Jersey while the Cubs wait for word on what the infielder plans to do. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Saturday there was nothing new regarding La Stella's status.
"I think it was very clear how he felt," Maddon said. "I think we were very clear back to him how we felt. ... I'm still very optimistic about him coming back, but nothing has changed."
La Stella was batting .295 when he was optioned to make room for outfielder on the 25-man roster. Instead of reporting to Triple-A Iowa, La Stella went home. The Cubs placed him on the temporarily inactive list.
La Stella, who would be added Sept. 1 when rosters expand, will have to get some at-bats in the Minor Leagues, Maddon said. Iowa's season ends Sept. 5.
"There is enough time, but he's got to go do that," Maddon said. "There is enough time for him to do that and get ready for September."
