Ryan ready to pitch after 'intense' bout of illness

May 9th, 2025

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins pitcher is recovering from a nasty illness that forced him to be scratched from his start Thursday. He is expected to take the mound Saturday at home against the Giants.

It hasn’t been a fun week for the right-hander. Ryan said the illness peaked on the Twins’ Monday off-day, and he spent almost all of Tuesday away from the ballpark. He participated in some activities Wednesday and threw a bullpen session Thursday but explained that he’s still not feeling at full strength.

“There’s stuff going around,” Ryan said. “Everyone’s gotten something, I would say, in the last month-ish. Some people were really sick in Boston. I don’t know. It was just intense.”

Ryan explained that he has been dealing with some level of not feeling well for about two weeks. He said that he has felt nauseated when his heart rate gets especially high. On Monday, the symptoms hit him extra hard. He estimated that he vomited “20-30 times” in a five-hour period.

Ryan has been improving since Tuesday, however, and on Friday he spoke with reporters in advance of his scheduled start.

Minor League updates
Left-hander , ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Twins' No. 13 prospect and one of their most intriguing arms, was removed from his last start for Single-A Fort Myers on May 3 due to what the club is calling “upper back tightness/spasms.” It’s unclear when Hill will pitch again, but the expectation is that it will not be a long-term situation and he has not been placed on the injured list. Hill, 19, was a second-round Draft pick in 2024 and has been lights-out in his first professional season.

Elsewhere in the Twins system, infielder/outfielder is back on the injured list due to a recurrence of his right hamstring strain. Martin was activated for a single game with Triple-A St. Paul and reinjured the muscle taking home on a double steal.
