Legendary Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling said he is recovering well after suffering a heart attack in early January.

The 87-year-old Sterling, who retired in April 2024 after a 64-year broadcasting career, told WFAN on Sunday that his heart is in good shape, although his legs have been affected.

“I’m kind of waiting for the force to leave my legs and I can get back out there,” Sterling said. “I’m very fortunate, and all things are good.”

Sterling, who announced his retirement after providing play-by-play commentary for 5,631 regular-season and postseason Yankees games, said his love for sports -- not just baseball -- is still evident. Laid up in bed during his recovery, Sterling spent time watching basketball and the Winter Olympics (and now, he can take in Spring Training games, too).

“I’ve always [felt] blessed [by] the fact, since I’ve been a little boy, that I’m a sports fan,” Sterling said.

The broadcasting legend, known for his iconic victory and home run calls, said he’s in good hands as he recovers. He credited his four children -- his daughter Abigail and triplets Bradford, Derek and Veronica -- for “taking over all phases of my life.”

“I couldn’t have done anything without them,” he said. “They have been sensational in taking care of me.”
