Jay scheduled to start extended spring training

May 5th, 2019

CHICAGO -- Outfielder was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday to make room for right-handed reliever 's addition to the White Sox 40-man roster.

The 34-year-old Jay is eligible to come off the disabled list on May 27, although there are no guarantees as he continues to deal with a right hip strain that has kept him out all season.

“I can't speculate on that only because he hasn't been out playing games,” said White Sox manager Rick Renteria. “We'll find out on that point. I know yesterday he pushed himself pretty good.”

Jay is scheduled to go to extended spring training at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz., on Monday where he will continue with baseball activities. He will need a Minor League rehab assignment following that Arizona work.

“At that point we should have a better idea of where he's at,” Renteria said.

“We’ll start ramping up his in-game activity there over the course of the next 10 to 14 days,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. “Hopefully at some point thereafter he’ll be able to join one of our affiliates and start a true rehab assignment. He’s progressing, but until we get him playing in games on a consistent basis he won’t truly be tested.”

White Sox roster moves

The White Sox recalled left-handed pitcher from Triple-A Charlotte and purchased the contract of Minaya prior to Sunday’s homestand finale with the Red Sox. They replaced Carson Fulmer and Jose Ruiz, who were optioned to Charlotte after Saturday's game.

Frare faced one batter during Sunday’s 9-2 loss, walking Andrew Benintendi on four pitches to force in a run during Boston's seven-run eighth. He was optioned to Charlotte postgame along with outfielder , with two corresponding moves to follow Monday.

Engel was a Gold Glove finalist in center during the 2018 season. But he has continued to struggle offensively, hitting .212 over 52 at-bats this season.

“We're making this move to get him the at-bats,” Renteria said. “I'll tell you what I told him: I want his dynamic defense to be parallel with some offense. Simple as that.”

“Obviously, I’m not in a great place as far as production, so if a move like that happens, it stinks,” Engel said. “But just to hear those guys support you it definitely helps. Just go down there and figure this thing out.”

Fulmer, the No. 8 pick overall in the 2015 Draft, threw 77 pitches over three games since Wednesday’s first game of the doubleheader against Baltimore. So, his move, along with Ruiz, was more about adding fresh arms to the frequently-used bullpen.

“He's still figuring in to be a part of this,” said Renteria of Fulmer. “Right now, if by sending him out is any indication that he's not, I would come back and say a lot of usage has precipitated his need to be sent down.

“We’ll see him as a part of who we are. He's going to work on attacking the strike zone and putting himself in the position where we continue to call for him to help us out here at the Major League level.”

Fulmer will continue to work out of the bullpen for Charlotte.

Burr getting close

, who was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to April 25 with A/C join inflammation in his right shoulder, is feeling close to a return.

“I’ll be ready whenever they are ready to activate me,” said Burr, who has a 5.68 ERA over 10 games this season. “It was kind of bothering me a little bit and just kind of got to a point where it was probably smart to say something.

“I’m glad I did when I did. But it was just a little fatigue, a little inflamed. A little bit of rest. A little ice. A little love in the training room. Feeling a lot better.”

He Said It

“I hope very, very well. Yesterday, you have to put it behind you. Thankfully, we had a few hours of sleep to get under our belt.” -- Renteria, on how his team would respond to Saturday’s loss.
