Source: Veteran Lucroy set to join Braves

May 15th, 2021

The Braves have signed veteran catcher Jonathan Lucroy to a Minor League deal, an industry source told's Mark Bowman on Friday. The club has not confirmed the deal.

Lucroy, who turns 35 in June, had a very brief stint with the Nationals earlier this season when Washington's catching depth was thinned by injuries. He appeared in five games, going 5-for-14 with a double. It now seems that Atlanta is looking for some insurance behind the plate in case injuries befall catchers William Contreras and Jeff Mathis.

Starting catcher Travis d'Arnaud is currently on the 60-day injured list due to a left thumb sprain.

Overall, Lucroy has had a 12-year MLB career behind the plate, with a slash line of .274/.335/.416. His best years offensively came with the Brewers, for whom he played from 2010-16. In '14, he led the Majors with 53 doubles and finished fourth in National League MVP Award voting.
