June 26: Mets part ways with Mendoza as Trade Deadline looms
One day after trading their longest-tenured player, David Peterson, and falling a season-worst 13 games under .500 with their sixth straight loss, the Mets have dismissed manager Carlos Mendoza and named Andy Green interim skipper.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan noted Wednesday night that rival executives were expecting “plenty more” deals from the Mets prior to the Trade Deadline on Aug. 3, and Mendoza's dismissal will only add to the speculation.
Mets brass may position the move as a last-ditch effort to save their season. But The Athletic's Will Sammon considers it to be more of an acknowledgement from the club that its season is effectively over.
Of note, Peterson is due to become a free agent at the end of the season. The Mets have a number of other pitchers on expiring contracts who would make logical trade candidates, should New York continue to fall out of playoff contention.
The headliner would seemingly be right-hander Freddy Peralta, a two-time All-Star who is in the final year of a 5-year, $15.5 million contract extension that he signed with the Brewers ahead of the 2020 season. Although Peralta’s first year in Queens is not going well -- he has a 4.83 ERA in 16 starts -- he has the pedigree of a frontline starting pitcher.
In the bullpen, left-handers Brooks Raley (1.93 ERA in 31 games) and A.J. Minter (0.00 ERA in 11 games) are reliable veterans capable of pitching late innings and high-leverage situations. Like Peralta, both Raley and Minter will be free agents at the end of the year.
June 24: Giants open to trading Devers, Adames, Chapman
The Giants, with a 29-43 record and 8 1/2 games out of a playoff spot, look like a potential seller as we creep closer to the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline.
Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said that the club will "leave all options on the table" when it comes to entertaining potential offers for first baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Willy Adames and third baseman Matt Chapman. Posey reiterated that San Francisco has no plans to move ace Logan Webb or any of its young players.
The Athletic first reported Monday that the Giants "have not fully committed to becoming sellers" but had begun gauging the market for some of their players. A source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that Devers, Adames and Chapman are players that the club is willing to move.
The Giants still have time to get back in the race, but they are facing a steep climb and haven’t shown enough to suggest they are close to making a run. San Francisco entered Wednesday with the second-worst record in the National League behind the Rockies.
With Webb not expected to be available, the Giants' most in-demand trade chip this summer is likely to be second baseman Luis Arraez, given his strong season, reasonable salary and modest prospect cost as a pending free agent.
Trades involving any of Devers, Adames or Chapman are less likely due to the money they are still owed on long-term contracts. More >
