Alfaro expects quick return from left calf strain

MIAMI -- Shaken up after a collision at second base on a steal attempt, was replaced in the fourth inning on Saturday in the Marlins’ 2-0 win over the Mets at Marlins Park.

But Miami’s 25-year-old catcher, who wasn’t scheduled to start Sunday’s series finale anyway, expects to be back in the lineup early next week.

“I'm fine,” said Alfaro, who exited with a mild left calf strain. “It feels like a bruise right now. It bothered me a little bit to walk right now. I'm expecting to be back on Tuesday.”

After closing out their three-game set with the Mets on Sunday, the Marlins are off on Monday before opening an Interleague series at Detroit on Tuesday. Chad Wallach, who caught the rest of Saturday’s win, is expected to be behind the plate on Sunday.

“I think Jorge will be fine,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “I plan on catching Chad anyway [Sunday].”

Alfaro was replaced after reaching third base on Pablo Lopez’s single off left-hander Steven Matz. Wallach stepped in for Alfaro to pinch-run at third base, and he remained in to catch and bat fifth.

Alfaro is hitting .258 with six home runs and 13 RBIs.

Alfaro, who has shown impressive speed for a catcher, had an eventful inning, reaching on an infield single to third. TV replays showed he may have tweaked something while touching the base with his left foot. But Alfaro said his leg was fine on that play.

With two outs, Alfaro was credited with his first stolen base of the season after he took off early from first base. Matz threw to first baseman Pete Alonso, who overthrew second baseman Robinson Cano. Alfaro’s left leg appeared to jam with Cano’s leg as the ball sailed into the outfield.

Alfaro took a few seconds to collect himself, attempting to walk off the discomfort.

After the Mets intentionally walked Miguel Rojas, Lopez slapped a single to left. If at full strength, Alfaro likely could have scored, but he trotted slowly to third base, filling the bases.

Alfaro was tended to by the training staff and even tested his leg with some light jogging. Mattingly didn’t take any chances and went with Wallach.

“They just asked me to check my leg, and after that, we'll see [Sunday] how it looks,” Alfaro said. “After that, I expect to be back Tuesday.”
