Abreu day to day with bruised left ankle

July 3rd, 2018

CINCINNATI -- White Sox first baseman left Monday's game against Cincinnati in the seventh inning with a bruised left ankle, the team announced. Chicago went on to fall, 5-3, to the Reds.
Abreu came to bat to lead off the sixth inning against Reds starter and fouled a ball off of his ankle. He finished the at-bat, which resulted in a groundout to third base, and also took the field for bottom of the sixth inning.
When his slot in the batting order came up with two outs in the seventh inning, he was pinch-hit for by Matt Davidson and it was announced shortly after that the Chicago slugger had bruised his left ankle.
"We removed Abreu from the game because he fouled that ball off his ankle, and he's done that a couple times now," manager Rick Renteria said. "We did it out of precaution to get ice on it and minimize the swelling and not allow that thing to start affecting him long term."
Abreu was the designated hitter for the White Sox in Sunday's finale against the Rangers, a move Renteria said was intentional to get Abreu off his feet with him not having to play the field.
Abreu is listed as day to day.
