CHICAGO -- Jose Abreu will be in Miami for the All-Star break from July 10-13 regardless of whether the White Sox first baseman is selected as a reserve for the American League team.
Abreu admits a trip to his offseason home could be made a little more special with his second All-Star honor. Then again, it's not something consuming his daily thoughts.
"I've been thinking about it. But I'm realistic too," Abreu told MLB.com through interpreter Billy Russo. "I know that there are a few more guys who are having a very good first half of the season.
"I'm not overwhelmed about it. Every player wants to be in the All-Star Game, but it's not something that I put in my mind."
In 2014, as a standout rookie, Abreu finished 0-for-1 as an AL All-Star during the game hosted by the Twins, with his parents looking on from the stands. His '17 statistics certainly would warrant a serious look among the All-Stars. American and National League All-Star rosters will be unveiled at 6 p.m. CT Sunday on the "Esurance All-Star Selection Show" on ESPN, prior to the network's 7 p.m. CT "Sunday Night Baseball" telecast featuring the Nationals at the Cardinals.
Abreu's 21 doubles lead all AL first basemen. His 54 RBIs trail only Logan Morrison. His .296 average sits third behind Eric Hosmer and Justin Smoak, while his .861 OPS ranks fourth.
Instead of pushing his case, Abreu seems more excited for his friend and teammate Avisail Garcia to earn his first All-Star nod. Garcia entered the final week of voting ranked fifth among AL outfielders, but his overall exclusion would be far more of a surprise than his inclusion based on his breakout first half.

"He deserves to be there. He has to be there, even if it's not in the starting lineup," said Abreu of Garcia, who is hitting .318 with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. "And we are sure that he's going to be a very good representative for us in that All-Star Game.
"We all are happy for Avi and you know we all support him. Everyone in this organization believes in him and we all know what he's capable of doing."
An All-Star selection won't be needed to validate Abreu's strong first half. It's a return to excellence and normalcy compared to Abreu's first half in 2016, with Abreu having great confidence for an even better second half.
There also won't be that pesky concern of hitting his first home home run of 2017 going into the All-Star break. Abreu took care of that moment in the first inning Friday night, marking his first Guaranteed Rate Field blast after 13 road homers and causing manager Rick Renteria to joke about retrieving the baseball.
"That would be a nice gift," said a smiling Abreu. "I'm just glad, relieved because that was the first one. For me, it's just the first one of many that are to come."
Abreu's confidence played out in the first inning Saturday, when he launched a two-run shot off of Cole Hamels in a 10-4 loss.

"I was talking with my wife in my house and she asked me and I told her I don't know. I was feeling good," Abreu added of Friday's home run. "My swing was good. But I don't know what was happening here. Like I said, yesterday was the first one and I'm sure that it's going to be many, many more coming."
