HOUSTON -- For the second consecutive year, Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was named both Major League Baseball's Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Player in the Players Choice Awards, which were revealed Wednesday night on MLB Network. The awards were voted on by the players in September.
Altuve, 27, made the All-Star team for the fifth time this season and won his third batting title, leading the Majors with a .346 batting average. He also hit 24 homers, had 81 RBIs and stole 32 bases to lead the Astros to the AL West title on their way to a World Series championship.
Altuve is the third player to win the Player of the Year Award in consecutive seasons since the award's inception in 1998, joining Jose Cabrera (2012-13) and Jose Pujols (2008-09). He is the fourth player in the 26-year history of the Players Choice Awards to win the AL Outstanding Player Award in consecutive seasons, joining Cabrera (2012-13), Alex Rodriguez (2001-03) and Frank Thomas (1993-94). The finalist for Player of the Year were Nolan Arenado of the Rockies and Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins, and the finalists for AL Outstanding Player were Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Jose Ramirez of the Indians.

With 204 hits, Altuve became the first player in Major League history to be the outright leader in hits in four consecutive seasons, and he became the 11th player in MLB history to record 200 hits in four consecutive seasons. In the AL, he ranked first in infield hits, tied for second in runs, third in on-base percentage, third in stolen bases, third in OPS, fifth in total bases and sixth in slugging.
Altuve hit .421 in Interleague Play, .441 in close and late situations and .381 on the road, leading the Majors in all three of those categories.
Altuve is one of three finalists for the Baseball Writers' Association of America AL Most Valuable Player Award, which will be presented on Nov. 16. Altuve is joined as a finalist by Judge and Ramirez. The only Astros player to win an MVP is Jeff Bagwell, who did it in the National League in 1994.
Altuve is the only player in franchise history to win the Players Choice Player of the Year Award, and the first to win multiple Outstanding Player awards. Bagwell was named NL Outstanding Player in '94. Altuve has already been named the 2017 Sporting News Player of the Year and 2017 AL Hank Aaron Award winner.

The Players Choice Awards, in which the players recognize each other's excellence on and off the field, have been presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association since 1992, with the Players Trust providing more than $4.7 million in charitable grants to causes selected by the winning players.
