SAN FRANCISCO -- Facing a roster crunch, the Giants announced a flurry of moves to get their 40-man roster back down to an even 40 players on Monday.
The Giants cut nine players, with José Buttó (Rangers), Duncan Davitt (Reds), Brett Harris (Phillies), Shay Whitcomb (Phillies) and Zach Morgan (Orioles) each being claimed off waivers. Joel Kuhnel and Seth Lonsway cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento, while Tristan Beck was placed on unconditional release waivers. Reiver Sanmartin was also designated for assignment.
The purge gave the Giants the roster space they needed to reinstate 15 players -- Blade Tidwell, Randy Rodríguez, Rafael Devers, Carson Whisenhunt, Jesus Rodriguez, Keaton Winn, Adrian Houser, Casey Schmitt, Joel Peguero, Harrison Bader, Daniel Susac, Matt Chapman, Trevor McDonald, Hayden Birdsong and Rowan Wick -- off the 60-day injured list on Monday.
Wick joined the Giants on a one-year deal in February, though he missed the entire 2026 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The Giants announced Monday that they declined Wick’s $800,000 club option for 2027, though the 33-year-old right-hander remains under club control and will be eligible for arbitration this winter.
The most notable players to be let go on Monday were Buttó and Beck, both of whom were part of the Giants’ bullpen mix in recent years.
Buttó, 28, was acquired from the Mets as part of the Tyler Rogers deal at the 2025 Trade Deadline, but he appeared in only three games this year before undergoing season-ending surgery to remove a blood clot from his right arm in April. The right-hander recorded a 6.14 ERA over 24 career appearances for the Giants and was eligible for arbitration after qualifying for Super Two status this offseason.
Beck, 30, had been with the Giants since 2019, when he came over from the Braves in exchange for Mark Melancon. The Stanford alum made his Major League debut with San Francisco in 2023 and logged a 4.08 ERA over 85 appearances across the last four seasons.
The Giants will face more difficult roster decisions in the coming weeks, as they’ll have to clear more 40-man spots for any free agents they sign, as well as any prospects they want to protect from the Rule 5 Draft.
Pitching prospects Henry Lalane (the Giants’ No. 11 prospect per MLB Pipeline), Joe Whitman (No. 23), Luis De La Torre (No. 25) and Marty Gair will be among the group of young players who will be eligible to be taken in the Rule 5 Draft unless they’re added to the 40-man roster by Nov. 17.
The Giants will also have until Nov. 20 to decide whether to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players, a list that includes Schmitt, Rodríguez, Wick, Camilo Doval, Ryan Walker and Sam Hentges.
