Marlins place Ekness on IL with calf strain; Brzykcy, Zuber recalled

WASHINGTON -- The Marlins were hit with another pitcher injury on Monday, when righty landed on the 15-day IL with a right calf strain. In turn, Miami recalled right-handed relievers and from Triple-A Jacksonville, and optioned righty Josh White back to Triple-A.

Ekness had been recalled on Friday but did not pitch during the Marlins’ three-game series vs. the Mets. The injury happened while Ekness was doing banded running exercises on Sunday pregame and “felt his calf go,” per manager Clayton McCullough.

The timeline for Ekness’ return to action is approximately six weeks. He returned to Miami for treatment on Monday and will rest the calf to ensure it heals before beginning a pitching progression. Ekness has made six appearances for the Marlins this season, all in early May when he was first recalled. He’s compiled a 1.69 ERA in 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and five walks with five strikeouts.

“To have a string of guys go down like this -- look, it is what it is,” McCullough said. “... You'll never hear me making an excuse for, you know, what has happened or anything. We feel like we certainly have a group here that we know can go out and win games.”

Among that group are Brzykcy, who the Marlins claimed off waivers from the Nationals in November, and Zuber, who had been claimed off waivers from the Mets on July 9, 2025, then signed to a Minor League deal this spring.

Brzykcy has appeared in 17 games for Jacksonville this year, with a 5.24 ERA in 22 1/3 innings. Zuber has made 19 relief appearances and one start for Jacksonville this season, accumulating a 5.20 ERA over 27 2/3 innings.

White, who was recalled to work out of the bullpen on Sunday vs. the Mets, has made that lone appearance for Miami this year, allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning.
