SEATTLE -- Rookie Josh Rogers made the most of his first career road start, but the Orioles' offense didn't provide much for the 24-year old right-hander to work with.
Rogers allowed just two runs over 5 1/3 innings, but Baltimore managed only three hits in a 2-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Monday night at Safeco Field.
Rogers, who pitched five innings and earned the victory in his first career start on Aug. 28, gave up four hits while walking two and striking out four.
"I was pretty calm the whole time," Rogers said. "I was real comfortable out there today. Leading up to the start, no real crazy surprises. That's a really good lineup they got over there. I was pretty confident the whole time. Fastball was pretty good early and was able to establish it at both sides of the plate."

Having logged 139 2/3 innings in Triple-A this season, and 10 1/3 with the Orioles, Rogers is unsure whether Baltimore will continue to stretch his innings through the rest of September, but he said he's ready to pitch every five days if needed.
"I've logged innings in my career and I feel good about it," Rogers said. " … If these two starts are all I got this year, that's something I'm super thankful for and really happy about."
Baltimore started the scoring when Jonathan Villar struck the right-field foul pole for his 12th home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning. But the Orioles recorded just one hit the rest of the night as they suffered their fourth loss in as many days.
"We didn't do anything offensively," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Had a home run and that was it."
The Mariners answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Rogers walked Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz with one out, and Cano scored on Ryon Healy's RBI single to center to tie the game at 1.
Dee Gordon's one-out sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Cameron Maybin, who led off the inning with a triple, providing the winning run and keeping Seattle 5 1/2 games back of Oakland for the American League's second Wild Card spot.
Right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis, called up from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, replaced Rogers and tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and right-hander Miguel Castro left two stranded in the eighth to keep Baltimore within striking distance.
Seattle starter Erasmo Ramirez picked up his second win of the season, allowing just two hits over 5 1/3 innings. The Mariners' bullpen held Baltimore to one hit, a one-out single by Joey Rickard in the eighth, and Edwin Diaz capped Seattle's victory by striking out the side for his MLB leading 52nd save of the season.

The Orioles have managed just one run in each of their last three outings.
"It's kind of struggling," Showalter said of Baltimore's offense. "We face a guy tonight that's had his issues and we just aren't swinging the bats very well. Getting in a lot of counts behind and swinging at pitches out of the zone, uncharacteristically."

Besides providing Baltimore with its only offense, Villar also contributed with a pair of defensive highlights at second base. With runners on first and third with two outs in the eighth, Villar ranged to his right and dove to stop a ground ball up the middle from Healy and returned to his feet to make the throw to first, keeping Baltimore within one run.

Villar made his first diving play of the game with two outs in the sixth, this time ranging to his left to snag a soft line drive by Gordon.

Right-hander Alex Cobb (4-15, 5.11 ERA) gets the start as the Orioles continue their series against the Mariners at 10:10 p.m. ET Tuesday at Safeco Field. Cobb took a no-decision in his first start against Seattle this season, allowing five runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 8-7 loss. The Mariners will start lefty Wade LeBlanc.
