Dodgers option Chargois to Minors camp

Maeda, Muncy play in Minor League game

March 21st, 2019

MESA, Ariz. -- The Dodgers optioned reliever JT Chargois to Minor League camp on Wednesday.

Chargois pitched in 39 games for the Dodgers last year with a 3.34 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings. But this spring he had a 5.40 ERA, allowing four runs in 6 2/3 innings and really struggled with his command in his seventh and final game with the big league club on Monday night.

Among right-handed relievers still in camp and fighting for jobs are Stetson Allie and Kevin Quackenbush. Allie pitched one inning Wednesday night with two strikeouts and one walk. He has 12 strikeouts and eight walks in 9 1/3 innings. If the Dodgers carry a third left-hander, it would be Caleb Ferguson, who has 11 strikeouts in seven innings but also has allowed seven runs in seven innings.

The club also has been giving an extended look at Minor Leaguers Yordy Cabrera and Luis Vasquez, who took over for Julio Urias and got the final out of the inning after walking his first batter.

The Dodgers have 36 players in camp; 19 are pitchers, including Clayton Kershaw and Tony Cingrani, who are injured.

Kenta Maeda threw five innings in a Minor League game, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and 69 pitches.

Max Muncy, who missed four games with a stiff wrist and has struggled offensively all spring, also played in the Minor League game. Muncy, who led the club with 35 homers last year and is expected to be the primary first baseman, is hitting .143 with 13 strikeouts in 35 at-bats and hasn’t homered.

• In Wednesday night’s 4-4 tie with the Cubs, Corey Seager and A.J. Pollock homered and Pollock, playing center field, made a rare putout at second base, taking a throw from third baseman Justin Turner to complete a double-play on a rundown. Pollock said it’s the first time he’s ever made a putout at second base.

• SportsNet LA announced that former Dodger Chase Utley has joined the broadcast team as a studio analyst.
