SAN DIEGO -- In 1978, Rollie Fingers and Dave Winfield represented the Padres in the first All-Star Game hosted by San Diego. Fourteen years later, five players, including Tony Gwynn and Benito Santiago, joined the list of Friars to represent the host city.
Who will join that group in 2016 at Petco Park's first Midsummer Classic? The fans will have the first say.
Right fielder Matt Kemp and first baseman Wil Myers headline the list of Padres on the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game ballot, which was released Sunday. The All-Star Game presented by MasterCard will take place Tuesday, July 12. Jon Jay and Melvin Upton Jr. join Kemp as potential outfield options.

If any of them are voted into the starting lineup, they would join Gwynn, Santiago and Fred McGriff as the only Padres to start an All-Star Game hosted by San Diego. All three took part in the 1992 affair at Jack Murphy Stadium.

Myers is hitting a team-leading .301 with an .819 OPS entering Sunday's game, while Kemp leads the club with five homers and 13 RBIs. Upton and Jay are 1-2 among Padres in on-base percentage.

Catcher Derek Norris and shortstop Alexei Ramirez are also named on the 2016 ballot. So, too, are second baseman Cory Spangenberg and third baseman Yangervis Solarte, who are currently on the disabled list but expected back in early May.
Browsing the ballot
The other side: Over in the American League, there's an extremely intriguing race for the starting third base spot, with the usual suspects -- Manny Machado, Josh Donaldson and Adrian Beltre -- piecing together fantastic starts. But Kansas City's Mike Moustakas has joined them early this season, having hit six homers.
Tip of the cap: In the NL, one player worth considering is Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, who played his college baseball at the University of San Diego. He may be a Las Vegas native, but it would be a homecoming of sorts for Bryant, who earned National League Rookie of the Year honors last season.
Rising star: Throughout his professional career, Tyler White has raked at every level. That now includes the Majors, as well. White took home AL Player of the Week honors for the season's opening week, and he's been a force in the Astros' lineup with an OPS over 1.000 and five homers.
