KANSAS CITY -- After fouling a pitch off the laces on his right foot in the fifth inning, Royals designated hitter Kendrys Morales was eventually replaced by pinch-hitter Christian Colón in a 7-3 win over the Indians on Monday night.
Colon delivered the tying two-run double that sparked a seven-run eighth inning as the Royals moved to seven games back of the first-place Indians.
Morales was officially diagnosed with a contusion on his right foot. He underwent X-rays, but the Royals announced that everything came back negative.
"Mo fouled that ball off his foot and it was real sore," manager Ned Yost said. "I haven't had a chance to go find out [if it's more serious]."
Morales has already dealt with a couple of injuries this season, neither of which have caused him to miss significant time. Morales injured his finger in May, which caused him to miss three games. He missed another game on July 6 due to a sore back.
According to the Royals, Morales is day to day with the contusion and is not expected to miss significant time.

As for the decision to pinch-hit Colon, Yost said it depended on the situation. Initially, Brett Eibner was in the on-deck circle, but he was replaced by Colon after Eric Hosmer singled to give the Royals two runners with none out.
Yost said he initially wanted Colon to bunt, but after the count went to 2-0, he was OK with Colon swinging away.
"We had a decision there," Yost said. "He [slashed] to perfection … It was just a perfect situation to do it."
