Kiermaier's rehab shut down till this weekend

Rays outfielder unlikely to return to Majors Aug. 8 when eligible

HOUSTON -- (right hip fracture) has not played a rehab game since starting for Class A Advanced Charlotte on Friday, as he has been battling back tightness.
"It doesn't affect him baseball-wise," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "[His back bothers him when he bends] over to catch a ground ball. It's doesn't affect him throwing, hitting or running, but little movements are grabbing him.
"He is in significant pain, so the doctor recommended he shut it down for a couple of days and see where he's at on Friday or Saturday."
Cash noted that he didn't think it was "a major thing, but it is going to derail Aug. 8 or Aug. 9 [return from the disabled list] I would think. Unless K.K. just forces his hand and says he's ready to play on Aug. 9."
Cash was asked whether he thought this setback would shut down Kiermaier for the season.
"No, not at all," Cash said.
Kiermaier went on the 10-day DL on June 9 after fracturing his hip on a slide into first base. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 28. He is eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 8.
