Khris Davis day to day after crashing into railing

PITTSBURGH -- Khris Davis made a highlight-reel catch in foul territory in the first inning of Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Pirates, but he sustained a left hip contusion in the process, the A's announced. A’s manager Bob Melvin said that the slugger is day to day.

On a pop fly from Adam Frazier, Davis ranged over to the railing along the left-field line at PNC Park, slamming into it as he snagged the ball for the first out of the game. He said he hit his hip bone on the railing before he tilted his head back in pain.

“I was just tracking the ball and kind of checked the fence, and I knew [I] was going to be close to the fence,” Davis said. “I just kept following the ball and stayed on it. I was happy I made the play, but a little sad I had to put myself out [of the game].”

Davis stayed in the game without needing a conference with a trainer, but headed to the clubhouse with a trainer after jogging off the field slowly when the inning ended. Chad Pinder replaced Davis in left field to begin the second.

The good news is Davis doesn’t think the injury should affect his playing time. The A’s are fortunate to have a day off Monday before taking on the Reds at the Coliseum on Tuesday.

“Just got stiff and sore right after, but I took [an anti-inflammatory] and I feel a lot better,” Davis said.

Though he’s in a bit of a power slump right now, Davis is the A’s biggest home run threat. He’s already put up 10 homers this season after hitting a Major League-leading 48 home runs last year. Davis hasn’t homered since April 12, but he’s still found ways to reach base, as he’s gone 7-for-25 with two doubles and five walks over the past seven games.
