DENVER – Kyle Karros answered the Rockies’ eighth-inning wakeup call on Sunday afternoon.
Karros launched a Statcast-estimated 457-foot three-run homer on a Dylan Smith four-seamer up in the zone to lift the Rockies to a 7-6 victory over the Giants and a win in the three-game series.
The shot lifted the Rockies to a Major League-leading 122 runs in the eighth inning or later. It was also their 27th homer at that juncture, which trails only the Braves (31) for most in the Majors.
The winning hit, Karros’ seventh homer of the season, overcame a two-homer day from the Giants’ Rafael Devers. Both of Devers’ shots, Casey Schmitt’s game-tying homer and Drew Gilbert’s two-run rocket came off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon, who, nonetheless, struck out seven in five innings.
