MIAMI – The Marlins’ dominating 12-3 win against the Angels at loanDepot park on Sunday afternoon, and the six-run fifth inning that sparked it, was dampened by Kyle Stowers’ injury in the midst of that offensive outburst.
Stowers exited immediately after stroking a two-run single to center field with what the Marlins described as “left hamstring discomfort” – the team said he would undergo further evaluation.
Leo Jiménez pinch-ran for Stowers and replaced him defensively at first base. Stowers was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, coming home in the first inning on a wild pitch after a stand-up triple to lead things off for the Marlins. He made just his fourth start of the season in the leadoff spot Sunday.
Entering the series finale against the Angels, the 2025 All-Star owned an .856 OPS and 39 RBIs in 56 games since June 1. Stowers opened this season on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain. Initially expected to miss three to four weeks, he made his season debut on April 19 after a five-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville.
If not for Stowers’ injury, Sunday was a stellar day for the home team. The victory improved the Marlins’ record at loanDepot park this season to 36-24. Since May 22, they’re 21-9 at home and have won eight of 10 series.
In the fifth inning, Griffin Conine blasted a two-run homer that traveled a Statcast-projected 434 feet with an exit velocity of 115 mph – his first of two homers on Sunday.
Conine’s rocket to right-center off right-handed reliever Shaun Anderson, the hardest-hit homer by a Marlin since outfielder Jesús Sánchez’s vs. the Reds on Aug. 5, 2024, gave the Marlins a 6-2 lead. That was followed by Javier Sanoja’s two-run single and Stowers’ hit.
Sanoja has recorded 14 RBIs with the bases loaded this season, the most by a Marlins hitter in that situation since Brian Anderson had 15 RBIs in 2019.
