Astudillo hits IL; Wade Jr. gets first callup

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins' compounding health issues in the outfield continued on Thursday, when was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique. LaMonte Wade Jr., the No. 22 prospect in the Twins' organization per MLB Pipeline, earned his first call-up from Triple-A Rochester to reinforce the club's thin outfield depth.

Astudillo said the injury stemmed from his collision with the wall on a leaping grab in foul territory on Tuesday. He felt tightness and pain in the oblique during the final at-bat of Wednesday night's 6-4 win over the Rays, necessitating the trip to the injured list.

"That’s obviously disappointing," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "He wants to be out there. He wants to be playing. He’s comfortable out on the baseball field, and when he can’t go out there and do what he loves to do, obviously, he’s not going to be happy. He’s going to be upset. I don’t blame him. We're going to take care of him, give him time to heal."

Though returned as a defensive replacement on Wednesday and was back in the starting lineup on Thursday after he was hit in the right elbow by a pitch on Tuesday, the Twins remain without five of their top outfield options in (right wrist contusion), (left ankle sprain), (right hamstring strain), (abdominal issues) and now Astudillo.

Wade Jr. was the only remaining outfield option already on the 40-man roster, and though he kept up with news surrounding the Major League team, he still said he was caught by surprise when he got the call from Triple-A manager Joel Skinner last night at his hotel during the Red Wings' road trip to Lehigh Valley.

"It's been crazy," Wade Jr. said. "I don't think I slept last night. I got the phone call from Joel Skinner last night and it was the best day of my life, honestly. I've been waiting a long time, just dreaming of it. Just to be here, it's awesome."

The 25-year-old outfielder was hitting .248/.393/.366 with five homers, 11 doubles and a triple in 70 games for Triple-A Rochester this season. Wade Jr. has displayed good bat-to-ball ability and discipline at every level, posting more walks than strikeouts in every Minor League season but 2018, when he was promoted to Triple-A for the first time. He had 51 walks and 43 strikeouts in 238 at-bats this season for the Red Wings.

"I've been getting on base a lot, been having tough at-bats, been getting on base and allowing [Brent] Rooker and those big guys down there that hit me in, hit home runs down there," Wade Jr. said. "So I'm trying to do the same thing up here: Come up here, get on base and let the big guys do what they do."

Injury updates

• Baldelli did not have an update regarding the status of Rosario, who sprained his ankle in the third inning of Wednesday's game as he rounded first base while trying to stretch a single into a double. He will undergo additional work in the training room on Thursday.

"He walked in, which is a great sign," Baldelli said. "After watching him walk out last night, it seems just visually that he’s doing a little bit better, but I don’t have a great update at the moment."

• The original plan had been for Buxton to hit again on the field on Thursday, but inclement weather in the Twin Cities prevented him from doing so. Buxton will instead hit in the cage against live throwing.

"Just the fact that he’s out there every day now as opposed to every two or three days, we're definitely getting pretty close, I think," Baldelli said.
