The Blue Jays and White Sox came together on an early-season trade Monday, the clubs announced.
Chicago is sending infielder Lenyn Sosa to Toronto in exchange for 18-year-old outfielder Jordan Rich and a player to be named later or cash.
Sosa, 26, had his best season in 2025, slashing .264/.293/.434 with 22 home runs and 75 RBIs across 140 games -- all career highs. He's off to a slow start to 2026, hitting .212 and still searching for his first home run.
A below-average defender in his career, Sosa has primarily played second base (197 games) but can also handle first (46 games) and third (65 games). That’s a necessary element for the Blue Jays, who -- among myriad injuries -- have outfielder/third baseman Addison Barger on the 10-day IL with a left ankle sprain.
Prior to Monday’s deal, the Blue Jays' infield depth consisted of the recently acquired Tyler Fitzgerald and Davis Schneider, who's been playing left field. No. 13 prospect Josh Kasevich is off to a solid start in Triple-A (.775 OPS), but the club prefers to wait on calling him up until regular reps are available.
To make room for Sosa on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays transferred right-handed pitcher Shane Bieber to the 60-day IL. That’s simply a procedural move and not a sign of a setback, as Bieber is throwing off the mound now and beginning to build up after being delayed by forearm fatigue and elbow inflammation.
As for the White Sox return, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Rich has yet to debut in professional baseball. The Blue Jays selected him in the 17th round of the 2025 Draft out of American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla.
The White Sox expect to make a corresponding roster move before Tuesday's series opener against the Rays.
