SEATTLE -- Finally, some good injury news for the battered Tigers.
Leonys Martin further tested his injured hamstring, but the results weren't enough to convince the Tigers he's ready to come off the disabled list.
A more comprehensive test is scheduled to come on Friday.
His replacement recently in center field, JaCoby Jones, showed no effects Thursday from a hip contusion he sustained during Wednesday's loss to Cleveland, which ended Detroit's homestand.
"Totally good to go," manager Ron Gardenhire said about Jones before Thursday's series opener at the Mariners, "which is good news for us."
Martin last played center field for Detroit on May 7 when he strained his left hamstring. He said everything went well Thursday when he ran early at Safeco before batting practice.
Martin becomes eligible to come off the 10-day disabled list Friday. He's going to show up to the park even earlier and run even harder, with the intent to play in Friday's night second game of the series.
"I took an aggressive jump, to simulate a game. And it felt normal," Martin said. "No pain."
Asked if he expected to play Friday when his former Mariners teammate Felix Hernandez is scheduled to start for Seattle, Martin said: "Yeah. Everything's going good. That's the plan.
Then he added, laughing: "I'm not the manager. That's the plan."
The actual manager described Martin as "getting pretty antsy" to play again.
"He thinks he's ready right now," Gardenhire said. "We still haven't seen him run the bases, so we are going to put him on the bases [Friday] … and see if he can explode, because that's the part where he has the biggest problem, it's the initial takeoff.
"We want to see him do that before we activate him. … But he's pretty adamant that he's ready to go."
The 30-year-old Martin signed a one-year contract worth $1.75 million contract with the Tigers this offseason. He was a spark the first month-plus of the season as their new leadoff batter. He is batting .294 with .355 on-base percentage and slugging percentage of .508.
Martin was 6-for-13 with three doubles in the three games before he got hurt. He was 2-for-4 with his fifth home run of the season and also made a running, diving catch May 7 at Texas. Then he felt pain the hamstring.
Jones had started the previous eight games in center field since Martin's injury. Detroit's left fielder for most of April batted 6 for 21 (.286) on the homestand, then left the loss at home to Cleveland on Wednesday with a hip contusion.

"JaCoby's fine. He came out [Thursday] and did everything," Gardenhire said. "He got his training work done and doesn't feel anything."

• First baseman Jose Cabrera, out since May 4 with a strained right hamstring, is on the trip to Seattle "going through his normal stuff," Gardenhire said.
• All of the Tigers on the 10-day DL -- including Jeimer Candelario (left wrist tendinitis), Alex Wilson (strained plantar fascia) and Jordan Zimmermann (right shoulder impingement) -- are with the team rehabilitating.
