Where does Miller's scoreless streak rank among relievers?

2:09 PM UTC

It seems impossible to score off of Padres closer right now.

Entering Tuesday's game against the Rockies, San Diego's scintillating reliever hasn't allowed a run since Aug. 5, 2025, when he made his second appearance as a Padre. Since then, Miller has strung together 32 2/3 scoreless innings and 31 scoreless appearances.

Both of those numbers have Miller on the verge of breaking into a couple of historic top 10s: Longest scoreless-innings streak by a reliever in the Expansion Era (since 1961), and most consecutive scoreless appearances. (Orel Hershiser holds the overall record for the longest single-season scoreless streak by a pitcher at 59 innings for the Dodgers in 1988. See the full top 10 of that list right here.)

Miller is one scoreless inning shy of Cla Meredith’s Padres record, which was set in 2006 and is tied for the seventh-longest among relievers in the Expansion Era, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He's just two scoreless appearances away from cracking that top 10 as well.

Here is a look at the company Miller could soon join.

Longest scoreless-innings streaks by a reliever, Expansion Era (since 1961)

1. , 41 innings -- 1989-90 Orioles
Olson's scoreless streak for the O's encompassed his final 26 2/3 innings of 1989 and was a big reason why he was named that season's American League Rookie of the Year and finished sixth in the AL Cy Young voting.

2-T. , 39 innings -- 2018-19 Astros
Pressly's streak began just a few weeks after he was traded to Houston from Minnesota in the middle of the 2018 season. He opened 2019 with 21 scoreless frames and was selected to his first All-Star Game that year before taking over as the Astros' closer in 2020.

2-T. , 39 innings -- 2008 Athletics
Opposing batters had no idea what to do against Ziegler, a right-handed submariner, when he made it to The Show in 2008. His career began with 39 scoreless innings before he allowed a run to the Rays in his 30th big league appearance.

4-T. , 38 innings -- 2021-22 Brewers
You probably weren't getting on base against Hader during this stretch unless he walked you. This 38-inning span included 16 walks but only 11 hits. And just two of those went for extra bases.

4-T. Bob Moose, 38 innings -- 1975-76 Pirates
A starter for the bulk of his 10-year career, Moose became a reliever almost exclusively beginning in 1975. He began the 1976 season with 24 1/3 scoreless frames and saved 10 games that year while making 51 relief appearances. Tragically, he passed away in an automobile accident on his 29th birthday that October.

6. , 37 2/3 innings -- 2011 Braves
Kimbrel essentially locked up the 2011 NL Rookie of the Year Award with this extended scoreless run, which included 25 saves and a 48.9% strikeout rate.

7. , 36 innings -- 2004 Twins
Romero had given up 19 earned runs over his previous 20 1/3 innings before he suddenly ripped off 36 consecutive scoreless innings in 2004. This 2 1/2-month-long stretch brought his ERA down from 5.70 to 2.59.

T-8. , 33 2/3 innings -- 2006 Padres
Meredith had only 11 appearances and 9 1/3 big league innings under his belt before embarking on his scoreless streak in the summer of '06. He finished that season with a 1.07 ERA across 50 2/3 innings.

T-8. Chris Short, 33 2/3 innings -- 1963-68 Phillies
You read that correctly: Short's scoreless streak as a reliever covered parts of six seasons. That's because the two-time All-Star spent much of that time in the Phillies' starting rotation. He played in 216 games during this period and appeared out of the bullpen only 33 times. But when he did, he put up zeroes.

T-10. , 33 1/3 innings -- 2015-16 White Sox
The White Sox were Albers' sixth team in as many seasons by 2015. He suffered a fractured finger that April during a brawl with the Royals and missed three months of action. But soon after he returned in July, Albers began his scoreless streak that included his final 22 1/3 innings of the year.

T-10. Warren Brusstar, 33 1/3 innings, 1983 Cubs
Brusstar was traded from the White Sox to the Cubs prior to the '83 season and made an almost immediate impact on Chicago's North Side with a scoreless streak that spanned 27 appearances and more than two months.

Most consecutive scoreless appearances since 1900

1-T. , 40 games -- 2021-22 Brewers
The left-hander went 31-for-31 in save opportunities and struck out 65 of the 142 batters he faced during this period. Hader did surrender a crucial home run against the Braves in the 2021 NLDS, but his regular-season scoreless streak extended into June of the following year.

1-T. , 40 games -- 2018-19 Astros
Pressly allowed only 20 baserunners across these 40 games (17 hits, three walks).

3. , 38 games -- 2011 Braves
Along with the 67 K's that Kimbrel racked up through his 37 2/3-inning scoreless streak in 2011, he permitted just 14 hits -- all singles.

4-T. , 37 games -- 2014-16 Rockies
Ottavino's 2015 season was limited to just 10 scoreless appearances before he underwent Tommy John surgery. He picked up right where he left off upon his return in July 2016, stringing together 21 appearances without allowing a run.

4-T. , 37 games -- 1999 Brewers-2000 Rockies
Myers was not scored upon in his final four games with Milwaukee before he was dealt to Colorado after the 1999 season. Coors Field isn't typically a place where pitchers thrive, but the lefty began his Rockies tenure with 33 consecutive clean outings, spanning the first three months of the season. Myers ended that year with a 1.99 ERA, making him the first Rockie to post a sub-2.00 ERA over at least 40 innings pitched.

6. , 35 games -- 2007-08 Phillies
In terms of innings, Romero's aforementioned 2004 streak with the Twins was longer than this one (28 1/3 innings), but Romero was still plenty effective for the Phils and a key member of their World Series-winning bullpen in 2008.

T-7. , 33 games -- 2014 Royals
Davis finished eighth for the AL Cy Young in 2014, thanks in large part to this streak. He had a 42:6 strikeout-to-walk ratio over these 33 scoreless games (31 2/3 innings). He and the Royals won the pennant that fall before Davis came back with another brilliant season in 2015, one that ended with a World Series title.

T-7. , 33 games -- 2010 Reds
Rhodes' only All-Star selection came in 2010, the penultimate season of his 20-year career. The 40-year-old southpaw gave up a run in his second appearance of the year for Cincinnati before going on this 30-inning streak, which ended just a couple days shy of July.

T-7. , 33 games -- 2007-08 Cubs
After 19 scoreless outings to end 2007, Eyre was sidelined at the beginning of the 2008 season by a sore left elbow. He debuted on May 10 and piled up 14 more clean appearances before he was sent to the Phillies prior to the Trade Deadline and won the World Series with them.

T-7. , 33 games -- 2002 Mets
Guthrie spent 17 seasons in the Majors, and Year No. 16 in 2002 was one of his best, thanks to this streak of 27 scoreless frames.
