Dodgers Stat of the Day: August 2021

September 1st, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Dodgers this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

Aug. 31: Dodgers 3, Braves 2 -- Buehler keeps rolling
Walker Buehler continued to make a case for the NL Cy Young Award as he recorded his 11th start with at least seven innings pitched and two or fewer earned runs. Buehler held the Braves to two runs over seven innings in his 27th start of the season, while striking out five and walking two. In six of his nine starts in the second half, Buehler has tossed at least seven frames with two or fewer earned runs.

Aug. 30: Dodgers 5, Braves 3 -- Urías first to 15
Julio Urías became the first 15-game winner in MLB this season after he pitched six innings of two-run ball. He allowed four hits and struck out seven en route to the win in his 100th career appearance.

Aug. 29: Rockies 5, Dodgers 0 -- Shut out at home
With the loss to the Rockies, the Dodgers have now been shut out five times this season. Interestingly enough, four of the five shutouts have come at Dodger Stadium.

Aug. 28: Dodgers 5, Rockies 2 -- Jansen ties Fingers
With the save against the Rockies, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen tied Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers for 14th all time on the saves list with 341.

Aug. 27: Rockies 4, Dodgers 2 -- Trea's 20-20 vision
With his solo homer off Kyle Freeland in the third inning, Dodgers infielder Trea Turner set a career-high with 20 homers in a season. Turner, who has 25 stolen bases this season, also joined the 20-20 club with the blast.

Aug. 26: Dodgers 4, Padres 0 -- Double digits for Scherzer
Max Scherzer struck out 10 and now has 103 career 10-strikeout games, the fifth-most all time.

Aug. 25: Dodgers 5, Padres 3 (16 innings) -- Jansen notches 1,000th K
With his ninth-inning strikeout against Austin Nola, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen recorded his 1,000th career strikeout. He's just the third reliever in Major League history to record 1,000 or more strikeouts with one team, joining Mariano Rivera (1,135) and Trevor Hoffman (1,029).

Aug. 24: Dodgers 5, Padres 2 -- Kenley shuts the door
Kenley Jansen made things interesting in the ninth, but the right-hander was able to lock up his seventh consecutive save attempt in the win over the Padres. Jansen now has 340 career saves, one behind Rollie Fingers for 14th all time.

Aug. 22: Mets 7, Dodgers 2 -- Feast on the East
Despite the loss, the Dodgers have dominated the National League East over the last decade, recording a .600+ win percentage against NL East squads, including a 21-9 (.700) record against the East this year.

Aug. 21: Dodgers 4, Mets 3 -- It's been awhile
When Albert Pujols homered off Rich Hill in the first inning, it marked the third-longest span in AL/NL history between home runs against a single pitcher at 14 years and four days. Pujols last homered against Rich Hill when Pujols was a member of the Cardinals and Hill pitched for the Cubs on Aug. 17, 2007.

Aug. 20: Dodgers 3, Mets 2 -- Home sweet home
With the win over the Mets at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers secured a winning record at home for a 16th consecutive season. Los Angeles has the second-best home record in baseball at 41-20 (.672), just behind San Francisco at 42-19 (.689).

Aug. 19: Dodgers 4, Mets 1 -- Winning Dodgers debut for Phillips
Donning the Dodgers uniform for the first time, Evan Phillips notched his first winning decision since Aug. 2, 2020, when he was a member of the Orioles. That is his only other big league win, in fact. Phillips tossed 2 1/3 innings of relief in his Dodgers debut and allowed one run on three hits with no walks and one strikeout.

Aug. 18: Dodgers 9, Pirates 0 -- The streak continues
The win in the series finale was the Dodgers' 16th consecutive against the Pirates, dating back to 2018. That winning streak tied the Dodgers' longest against any team since the franchise moved to Los Angeles.

Aug. 17: Dodgers 4, Pirates 3 -- Treinen's dominance
With another scoreless inning, Blake Treinen has now tossed 23 2/3 consecutive frames without allowing an earned run.

Aug. 16: Dodgers 2, Pirates 1 -- Owning the Bucs
The Dodgers have won 14 consecutive games against the Pirates, the longest streak against Pittsburgh in franchise history. During that span, the Dodgers have outscored the Pirates, 97-43.

Aug. 15: Dodgers 14, Mets 4 -- Never let it go
The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead against the Mets on Sunday and never trailed in the finale. That marked the 49th time this season that they have never trailed in a game, the most in the Majors.

Aug. 14: Dodgers 2, Mets 1 (10 innings) -- Buehler continues dominance
Walker Buehler allowed one run and struck out 10 over seven innings on Saturday. It was the sixth time this season that he went at least seven innings and allowed one run or fewer.

Aug. 13: Dodgers 6, Mets 5 (10 innings) -- The Trea effect
Since making his Dodgers debut on Aug. 6, Trea Turner has at least one hit and one run scored in five of his six starts with the team. The Dodgers are 5-1 with Turner in the starting lineup.

Aug. 12: Phillies 2, Dodgers 1 -- One-run struggles
The Dodgers dropped to 13-21 in one-run games this season. Only the Marlins and D-backs -- a pair of last-place teams -- have more one-run losses to this point. Los Angeles' .382 winning percentage in those contests would be its worst in a single season since 1992, when the club went just 17-40 (.298) in games decided by a single run. For what it's worth, only one team with a sub-.400 winning percentage in one-run games during the regular season went on to win the World Series that postseason: the 1948 Indians (10-20, .333).

Aug. 11: Dodgers 8, Phillies 2 -- Lucky 13
Cody Bellinger hit two home runs, the first coming at the end of a 13-pitch battle against Kyle Gibson of the Phillies. It was the longest at-bat by a Dodger to end in a home run since Alex Cora homered on the 18th pitch of an at-bat on May 12, 2004. The win over the Phillies also marked the 13th multi-homer game of Bellinger's career.

Aug 10: Dodgers 5, Phillies 0 -- Trea continues to torment Phils
Trea Turner collected his 40th multihit game of 2021, trailing only Adam Frazier of the Padres. The Phillies have felt the sting of Turner's bat this season, as he's hitting .356 (16-for-45) with four doubles, one homer, four RBIs, eight runs and a .919 OPS in 11 games against Philadelphia this year.

Aug. 8: Dodgers 8, Angels 2 -- More new arms for Dodgers
With Kevin Quackenbush making his season debut and Justin Bruihl making his MLB debut Sunday, the Dodgers have used 32 pitchers this season. That's the most pitchers ever used in a single season by the Dodgers.

Aug. 7: Dodgers 5, Angels 3 -- Turner flashes speed
It didn't take long for the newly acquired Trea Turner to show off what kind of a difference-maker he can be with his legs. In the first inning, Turner covered 30.6 ft/sec while scoring from first, which is the fastest run by a Dodger all season long.

Aug. 6: Angels 4, Dodgers 3 (10 innings) -- Pollock's streak
With his single in the eighth inning on Friday, AJ Pollock extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games. He also extended his on-base streak to 23 games.

Aug. 4: Dodgers 7, Astros 5 -- Scherzer gets the best of Altuve
New Dodgers pitcher Max Scherzer made a strong impression in his first start with the team, especially by striking Jose Altuve out three times. Scherzer became just the third pitcher to ever strike out Altuve three times in a single game, joining Zack Greinke and Matt Cain.

Aug. 3: Astros 3, Dodgers 0 -- Bellinger's struggles
Cody Bellinger has struggled mightily at the plate this season, mostly because of his inability to hit high velocity. After his eighth-inning strikeout on a Kendall Graveman 98 mph sinker, Bellinger is now 1-for-30 with no extra-base hits and 19 strikeouts on pitches with a velocity of 95 mph or higher.

Aug. 1: Dodgers 13, D-backs 0 -- Pujols' bases-loaded history
Albert Pujols ripped a three-run double to left field during the Dodgers' five-run second inning, marking his 80th career bases-loaded hit. That moved him ahead of Jeff Kent for sixth all time in AL/NL history. Pujols also had a bases-loaded hit the night before -- a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh.
