Giolito, López traded to Angels

July 27th, 2023

MLB.com is keeping track of all the latest news and rumors surrounding White Sox right-hander , who is a trade candidate leading up to the Aug. 1 Trade Deadline.

July 26: Giolito dealt to Angels
Just hours after a report surfaced that the Angels will not be trading two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani prior to the Aug. 1 Trade Deadline, the Halos struck a deal with the White Sox to acquire Giolito and Reynaldo López in exchange for catcher Edgar Quero (the Angels No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline) and left-hander Ky Bush (No. 3). July 26: Are Reds a fit for Giolito?
Second base has been a multiyear issue for the White Sox, really since they decided to move Yoán Moncada to third base after the 2018 season. Might they use one of their top trade chips to try to solve it?

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman sees a potential match between the White Sox and Reds, with Cincinnati reportedly willing to move Jonathan India for pitching help.

Although the Reds would prefer a controllable arm, Heyman thinks a Giolito for India swap makes sense for both sides.

Cincinnati reportedly checked in with the White Sox earlier this month about some of their available arms, though it’s unclear where they stand on Giolito at the moment.

July 21: D-backs interested in Giolito (sources)
The Dodgers have been heavily linked to Giolito but they're not the only team in the NL West interested in acquiring him. According to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi, the D-backs are also one of the teams who have inquired about the impending White Sox free agent.

Arizona's interest in Giolito is hardly surprising, given the club's current position in the top NL Wild Card spot. It makes even more sense when you look at the current state of the D-backs rotation. Zac Gallen is an undeniable ace and could very well win the NL Cy Young Award this season. Beyond him, there are questions aplenty for a team that is in a good spot to make the playoffs.

Merrill Kelly, who hasn't pitched since June 24 due to a calf injury, had pitched extremely well (3.22 ERA in 95 innings) prior to his IL stint and could be back soon after making his second rehab start on Thursday. Even when he does, Arizona's other options haven't inspired much confidence to be potential playoff starters.

Of the remaining four starters who've thrown at least 20 innings, three of them have an ERA of 4.82 or higher, including Zach Davies, who was just placed on the injured list with lower back inflammation. Tommy Henry has been a nice story with a 3.96 ERA but the underlying numbers have not supported that continuing. Another starter, like Giolito, who can slot in as the No. 2 or 3 guy, can alleviate these concerns and give Arizona a strong trio of starters.

July 18: Giolito among SP targets Astros reportedly considering
The defending World Series champions remain in the hunt for the AL West title, but their rotation issues have become more glaring lately as Cristian Javier (12.06 ERA since June 21) and Hunter Brown (7.23 ERA since June 19) have struggled.

Houston’s depth has been tested already this season, with Lance McCullers Jr., José Urquidy and Luis Garcia all spending significant time on the IL, and general manager Dana Brown has indicated that adding a starter prior to the Trade Deadline is now a priority for the club.

According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Astros’ “dream acquisition” is White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease, though it’s unclear if the 27-year-old will be part of Chicago’s sale. Heyman previously reported that Cease, who is controllable through 2025, is one of the players the White Sox are looking to retain and build around.

It’s possible, then, that the Astros could pivot to another White Sox starter, Giolito, who is an impending free agent. Per Heyman, Giolito is one of the alternatives Houston is considering, along with Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman (opt-out), Cardinals left-hander Jordan Montgomery (impending free agent) and Tigers lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (opt-out).

July 15: Which clubs are potential fits for Giolito?
With the White Sox ready to sell at this year’s Trade Deadline, Giolito could be among the most popular starting pitchers on the market.

The Dodgers have already been connected to the impending free agent, and the Reds could be a fit as well. According to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi, Cincinnati has talked to the White Sox as it looks for rotation help. Presumably, Giolito and Lance Lynn were mentioned in those conversations.

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman named the Rangers as another potential fit for Giolito, and the Orioles and Red Sox are two more, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

July 13: Dodgers interested in Giolito (sources)
The Dodgers' pitching rotation has been beset by injuries this season. Julio Urías and Tony Gonsolin have spent time on the injured list this year. Clayton Kershaw and Noah Syndergaard are on the IL right now. Walker Buehler may not pitch at all this season, and Dustin May is out until 2024. As they push for their 11th NL West title in the past 12 years, the Dodgers are expected to target pitching at the Trade Deadline, and sources have told MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi that the team is interested in Giolito.

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman recently wrote in the New York Post that the White Sox are "ready to sell," with Giolito among the most likely to be moved prior to the Aug. 1 Deadline. Giolito, who was born in Southern California and attended high school in the L.A. area, is on track to reach free agency following this season. He is making $10.4 million in his final year of arbitration and will turn 29 years old on July 14. Giolito has rebounded from a subpar 2022 campaign to post a 3.45 ERA through 19 starts. He has struck out 117 batters in 112 1/3 innings.

July 11: Giolito 'most likely to be traded' amongst White Sox (report)
The Chicago White Sox are "open for business" as sellers, writes MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman in the New York Post, with Giolito among the club's players who are most likely to be traded. Giolito, who will be a free agent after the season, entered the All-Star Break with a 3.45 ERA in 112 1/3 innings this season, bouncing back from a disappointing 2022 season (4.90 ERA) and boosting his trade stock ahead of the Deadline.

According to Heyman, the Reds, Rangers and Dodgers are all expected to be in on the 28-year-old Southern California native.
