The Mets locked up an important part of their team defense on Saturday, agreeing with catcher on a two-year, $11.5 million extension, a source told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. The team has not confirmed the deal, which was first reported by Will Sammon of The Athletic.

Torrens, who turned 30 on Saturday, was due to become a free agent following the 2026 season, but this deal keeps him under contract through '28.

Torrens' main value is his defense, especially his ability to throw out runners. He has caught three runners stealing this season in seven attempts. He also leads MLB with 20 CS above average since the start of 2024, as well as a 47 percent caught-stealing rate. Second place in that time is San Diego's Freddy Fermin at 36 percent.

Torrens' average catcher pop time to second base was 1.87 seconds last year (fourth fastest) and is 1.86 sec this year (tied for fastest, albeit on only 5 attempts.
