Notes: Weaver's start; Clippard update

March 21st, 2021

knows that fans may look at his stat line from Saturday's start in the D-backs' 6-6 tie with the Royals and think he didn't pitch well, but the right-hander would beg to differ.

"I thought it went really well, honestly," Weaver said. "You know, sometimes we look back and we see a stat line and we're like, 'What the heck is this guy talking about?' But it was definitely the first outing this year where everything came together -- fastball and changeup. I mean, that was the best I've thrown my changeup in a while."

The breaking stuff was a bit of a mixed bag for Weaver.

"I couldn't land the curveball today, but it had good action, and some sliders had good action as well," he said.

Clippard has MRI

D-backs right-hander Tyler Clippard had an MRI taken of his right shoulder, but manager Torey Lovullo said the team did not have a complete picture of the injury.

Clippard left his outing on Friday with right shoulder discomfort.

"We're still gathering some information," Lovullo said. "I don't have a complete report to give you right now."

Tipping?

Lovullo kept a close eye on left-hander Alex Young during a simulated game on a back field on Saturday morning. Was the skipper looking to make sure that Young was not tipping his pitches?

"As coaches, we’re trained to do that type of stuff," Lovullo said. "We’re coaching on every level, having conversations internally. So just getting different perspectives and that’s stuff we’re keyed in on, and always want to make sure we’re doing our job as a coach to prevent those types of things. We’ll continue to fine-tune that and give information to players as needed."

Young had a rough go of it in his last Cactus League outing against the Giants on March 14, allowing five runs on eight hits over three innings.

Lovullo did not make it clear whether the coaching staff thought Young might have been tipping pitches in that outing.

"I’m not sure about the last time out," Lovullo said. "I just know today we had a general curiosity and we were comparing notes. We’ll continue to watch that, monitor that, and make sure he’s not."

Progress

Right-hander Jon Duplantier, who was scratched from an outing this past week after sustaining a cut to a finger on his pitching hand, threw a bullpen session on Saturday.

"He threw, I think it was a 30-pitch bullpen today [and] felt good," Lovullo said. "We’ll figure out what the next parts of his plan are, whether it’s another bullpen or getting in to face some live hitters. We feel like there’s enough of a progression that I can let you know it went well and there will be obviously a plan moving forward, but what that is right now, we don’t know."

Up next

Right-hander Taylor Clarke will start against the White Sox at 1:10 p.m. MST on Sunday at Salt River Fields. Stefan Crichton, Kevin Ginkel, Joe Mantiply and Miguel Aguilar are also scheduled to pitch for the D-backs. Lefty Madison Bumgarner will pitch in a "B" game.
