MILWAUKEE -- One week after taking a sharp comebacker off the back of his pitching elbow, Madison Bumgarner will make his next start for the Giants as scheduled, taking the mound against the Brewers Saturday in another audition for a potential suitor.

Bumgarner suffered a left elbow contusion after being hit by a 98.3-mph liner off the bat of Jose Martinez in his last start against the Cardinals on July 6. He completed only two innings before being forced to depart due to swelling in his lower left triceps area.

Bumgarner said he threw twice over the All-Star break at his home in North Carolina and feels he is ready to go. The swelling on his arm has subsided, though some bruising remains. Bumgarner wore a compression sleeve on his left arm while taking batting practice at Miller Park on Friday.

“We had the training staff look at it, and they say he’s good to go for tomorrow,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “Right now, he’s the scheduled starter.”

The Brewers are among the contending clubs who are rumored to be interested in Bumgarner, who allowed five runs (three earned) over six innings on June 15 against Milwaukee at Oracle Park.

Smith recounts All-Star experience

Giants closer Will Smith was succinct in summing up his first career All-Star Game.

“It was cool until I let the first pitch go,” Smith said.

Smith entered the game in with two outs in the seventh inning to face Rangers slugger Joey Gallo, but he misplaced a first-pitch fastball that Gallo promptly launched out to right field, extending the American League’s lead to 4-1.

Smith retired Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor on a groundout to cap his three-pitch appearance. The AL went on to beat the National League, 4-3. The 30-year-old left-hander said he discussed his pitch selection with Brewers catcher Yasmani Grandal and resolved to start Gallo off with a heater.

“I told him, I want to throw a first-pitch fastball,” Smith said. “I’m not going to have my first pitch be a breaking ball at my first All-Star Game. I just happened to throw it right down the middle. And he hammered it. But that’s all right.”

Worth noting

• Right-hander Dereck Rodriguez, who is being stretched out as a starter in the Minors, gave up two solo home runs over 4 2/3 innings in an outing for Class A Advanced San Jose on Wednesday. He walked one and struck out nine in the 77-pitch effort. The Giants had Rodriguez pitch for San Jose to work around the Triple-A All-Star break this week.

Rodriguez is a candidate to start Game 2 of Monday’s doubleheader in Colorado, but Bochy said the Giants have not yet made a decision for that spot.

“We got him built up,” Bochy said. “If that’s the way we want to go, we have him ready.”

• Backup catcher Stephen Vogt, who suffered a left knee contusion after being struck by a foul ball last Sunday, received treatment Thursday and is expected to catch Sunday’s series finale at Miller Park.
