Makeup dates for Tigers-Cards announced

August 6th, 2020

DETROIT -- Major League Baseball on Thursday announced makeup dates for the four-game Tigers-Cardinals series that was postponed this week. The teams will play a pair of seven-inning doubleheaders -- one on Aug. 13 at Comerica Park starting at 1:10 p.m. ET, the other on Sept. 10 at Busch Stadium starting at 2:15 p.m. ET. Both dates were originally off-days for Detroit; Aug. 13 opened for the Cardinals when their Field of Dreams Game in Iowa for that day was cancelled.

To account for the travel to St. Louis, the Tigers’ Sept. 9 home game against the Brewers has been moved up to 1:10 p.m. ET.

The doubleheader means the Tigers will need a sixth starter for next week, which likely explains why manager Ron Gardenhire said the team is still debating their rotation options beyond Michael Fulmer.

“Fulmer's going to be in there, and we're still working on the last one, where we're going,” Gardenhire said on Thursday afternoon before the scheduling announcement.

The Tigers can use a 29th player for the doubleheaders, which could mean a long-awaited spot start for top pitching prospect Casey Mize.

It would not be the first time the Tigers used a doubleheader to debut a highly anticipated prospect. In 2005, Justin Verlander made two spot starts in doubleheaders, including his Major League debut on July 4 in Cleveland, before cracking the Tigers' rotation the following spring.
