Machado, Grisham given day off to heal

May 22nd, 2021

With the Padres enjoying their best offensive stretch of 2021, manager Jayce Tingler is giving some key cogs time to recuperate from injuries.

Third baseman (right shoulder tightness) and center fielder (heel bruise) were out of the lineup Saturday night as the Padres continued their weekend series against the Mariners. Counting the team’s off-day Thursday, Machado has had three days of rest. Grisham hit a leadoff homer Friday vs. Seattle and then came out of the Padres’ 16-1 blowout win early.

“It’s more just precautionary stuff,” Tingler said. “If it were different parts of the season, honestly, they would be going. We’re using our depth. Our guys are playing well right now. … With 33 games in 34 days, if we get a chance not to push through some things, that’s where we’re at.”

In their last 11 games before Saturday, the Padres averaged seven runs a game and posted a robust .381 team on-base percentage. That includes the stretch that saw Fernando Tatis Jr., Eric Hosmer, Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo miss time because of COVID-19 issues. Wil Myers remains out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Machado, 28, reported shoulder discomfort as far back as mid-April, but Friday marked only the second game he sat out in 2021.

“Manny’s an incredibly tough dude,” Tingler said. “You never hear him complain. He just puts his head down and goes to work. … You ask him how he’s doing, and he’s going to tell you, ‘I’m good to go.’”

Cronenworth a cornerstone

Only one Padres player has played in every game this season: versatile second baseman Jake Cronenworth. He brought a .314/.384/.479 slash line into Saturday and has surged along with the team offense. In that recent 11-game stretch, Cronenworth batted .432 with eight extra-base hits.

“The most impressive thing about him is he has not stopped getting better in all areas of his game,” Tingler said. “He continues to grow at the plate, defensively, baserunning, baseball IQ. He’s a student of the game. He knows the league. He knows players in and out of the league. He’s a baseball rat.

“Because of the work ethic, it seems like in every aspect, he continues to improve. It feels like he’s running faster. It feels like he’s barreling up more balls. It feels like he knows the strike zone better.”

Notable

• The Padres will face the Reds at 5:40 p.m. PT on June 17, a time change from 7:10 p.m. That will be the first game at Petco Park with no capacity restrictions since 2019, and the Padres plan postgame fireworks to mark the occasion.

• Left-hander Drew Pomeranz threw a bullpen session on Friday and is slated to throw live batting practice on Sunday as he works his way back from a left shoulder impingement.

• Right-hander Taylor Williams (right knee inflammation) had an arthroscopic cleanup of his meniscus and has started playing catch on flat ground, Tingler said.
