BOSTON -- Marco Hernandez made an impact in his Major League debut for the Red Sox, going 1-for-2 with a walk, a single, a stolen base and a run scored during Sunday's 5-3 loss against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
Hernandez, who bats left-handed, filled the No. 9 spot and played second base. He picked up his first career hit -- and the Red Sox's first hit of the game off Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez -- with a broken-bat single in the fifth. The 23-year-old then stole second and scored on a single by Mookie Betts to cut the Blue Jays' lead to 2-1.
Hernandez also drew a walk after working the count full in his first plate appearance.
"He did an excellent job for us," said shortstop Xander Bogaerts. "He looked solid offensively, defensively, ran the bases well, created a run for us."

Hernandez is Boston's No. 13 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com. The Red Sox called him up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday. In 14 Spring Training games this year, he went 11-for-19 with six doubles and seven RBIs.
"He was impressive in Spring Training," manager John Farrell said. "I don't think the moment or the day was something that he didn't handle emotionally. He gets a good read to get the stolen base, he advances on an error, scores our only run. I thought he took good swings, controlled the count with a base on balls. A very good first day."

Even after his scorching-hot spring, Hernandez was surprised to be called up so early in the year.
"I expected middle of July when they play against the National League to pinch-hit for the pitcher," Hernandez said.
Boston acquired Hernandez in December 2014 as the player to be named in the trade that sent southpaw Felix Doubront to the Cubs.
In 583 Minor League games since 2010, the Dominican native has hit .280 with 26 home runs and a .710 OPS.
Hernandez, who abandoned switch-hitting in 2014, has spent the bulk of his time at shortstop but has played 45 Minor League games at second base.
"I don't know the angles [at second base] yet, I've been playing short," Hernandez said. "But at the same time, I played second a couple games at Pawtucket. I just keep working there and you never know what happens."
