NEW YORK – The Yankees took a flyer on a former top prospect Thursday, claiming infielder/outfielder Marco Luciano off waivers from the Orioles.
Known for electric bat speed and right-handed pop, Luciano was once rated as the Giants’ top prospect, having been featured on MLB Pipeline’s list of the Top 100 prospects from 2020-24.
But those skills didn’t translate into big league success in limited duty with San Francisco from 2023-24, when Luciano batted .217 with a .590 OPS in 41 games.
The 24-year-old Luciano spent all of 2025 with Triple-A Sacramento in the Giants’ system, batting .214 (99-for-462) with 21 doubles, 23 homers and 66 RBIs in 125 games, appearing mostly in left field.
In 500 Minor League games, Luciano has tallied a .246/.355/.445 slash line.
Luciano has bounced around this offseason. He was claimed on waivers by the Pirates on Dec. 5, but Pittsburgh designated him for assignment two weeks later. Baltimore claimed him on Jan. 7 but let him go last week.
The move fills the Yankees’ 40-man roster, though they will have at least one more move coming when Cody Bellinger’s signing is formally announced. Bellinger agreed Wednesday to a five-year, $162.5 million contract, which is pending a physical.
