SEATTLE – The Seattle Chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) announced today the recipients of their annual awards:
- Randy Arozarena, OF – Most Valuable Player
- Logan Gilbert, RHP – Most Valuable Pitcher
- Cal Raleigh, C – Larry Stone Good Guy Award
Arozarena, 31, is batting .279 (156x559) with 109 runs, 32 doubles, 1 triple, 26 home runs, 76 RBI, 25 stolen bases and 68 walks, reaching base at a .380 clip and slugging .479 for an .859 OPS in 151 games played this season. His 109 runs scored currently lead the American League, on pace to become the first Mariners to lead the league in runs since Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound outfielder is the only player in the Majors to record 20+ home runs and 20+ stolen bases in each of the last 6 seasons (2021-c) and just the 5th player in MLB history to record 6-consecutive 20+ HR and 20+ SB seasons, joining Barry Bonds (9x, 1990-98), Bobby Bonds (7x, 1969-75), Bobby Abreu (7x, 1999-2005) and Willie Mays (6x, 1955-1960).
On August 22 vs. the Cubs, he hit a leadoff and walk-off home run in the same game, the first player in Mariners history to accomplish the feat and just the 7th player in MLB history, joining Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chris Young, Ian Kinsler, Reed Johnson, Darin Erstad and Vic Power.
He spent time on the 10-day Injured List with a left hamstring strain (June 13-22), his first stint on the Injured List since August 2021 with Tampa Bay.
Arozarena represented Seattle at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia in July and is a three-time All-Star (2023, ’25-’26), making the Midsummer Classic with the Mariners in each of the last two seasons.
The Mantua, Cuba native was acquired by the Mariners from Tampa Bay in exchange for minor leaguers Brody Hopkins, Aidan Smith and a player to be named later (Ty Cummings) on July 26, 2024. In 949 career games across 8 Major League seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2019), Tampa Bay Rays (2020-24) and Mariners (2024-c), Arozarena is batting .255 (883x3463) with 558 runs scored, 191 doubles, 11 triples, 144 home runs, 466 RBI, 391 walks and 154 stolen bases, posting a .349 on-base percentage and .441 slugging percentage.
Gilbert, 29, has made 31 starts for the Mariners this season, going 12-11 with a 3.81 ERA (77 ER, 182.0 IP), 48 walks, 197 strikeouts and a 1.104 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .227 batting average.
He reached 1,000 career strikeouts on July 11 at Tampa Bay, becoming 1 of 5 Mariners pitchers to reach the 1,000 career strikeouts with Seattle. On September 23 vs. Houston, he passed Mark Langston for 4th-most strikeouts in Mariners history and trails only Félix Hernández (2,524 SO), Randy Johnson (2,162) and Jamie Moyer (1,239) on Seattle’s all-time strikeout list.
Gilbert is 1 of 7 pitchers in Mariners history to reach 1000.0 innings pitched, along with Félix Hernández (2729.2 IP), Jamie Moyer (2093.0 IP), Randy Johnson (1838.1 IP), Mike Moore (1457.0 IP), Mark Langston (1197.2 IP) and Freddy García (1096.1 IP).
He was named American League Player of the Week for the week of June 15-21, his 2nd career Player of the Week honor (also: July 3-9, 2023). He made 2 starts during the week, combining for a 2-0 record and a 1.35 ERA (2 ER, 13.1 IP) with 3 walks and 18 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .116 batting average.
Gilbert was drafted by Seattle in the 1st round (14th overall) of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Stetson University (DeLand, FL). He has appeared in parts of 6 seasons with the Mariners (2021-c), going 59-47 with a 3.62 ERA (409 ER, 1017.1 IP), 229 walks, 1,081 strikeouts and a 1.067 WHIP. He was selected to his first All-Star Game in 2024.
Raleigh, 29, is a first-time recipient of the Larry Stone Good Guy Award. He is the second recipient of the award overall, after the inaugural award was given to right-handed relief pitcher Andrés Muñoz in 2025. The award was introduced beginning in 2025, replacing the Unsung Hero Award.
“Despite his individual struggles this season and dealing with his first stint on the Injured List, Cal never changed as a person. He was available to everyone as much, if not more, than his 60-homer season,” Ryan Divish, Seattle BBWAA Chapter Chairman and The Seattle Times Staff Writer said. “He still treated everyone – his teammates, Mariners staff, media and the fans – with the same level of humble grace. He held himself accountable for not only his underperformance but also the team’s failures.”
The award is named in honor and recognition of longtime Seattle Times baseball writer and columnist and former National BBWAA President Larry Stone. The award recognizes a player whose contributions spill out beyond the field and include their presence in the clubhouse and community, and their interactions with the media.
Raleigh has appeared in 124 games this season, posting a .663 OPS with 23 home runs and 68 RBI, batting .179 (79x442) with 49 runs, 15 doubles and 71 walks with a .369 slugging percentage. Raleigh spent time on the 10-day Injured List with a right oblique strain from May 14-June 15.
In 34 games since August 16, Raleigh has produced 1.8 wins above replacement (FanGraphs) which rank 3rd-most in the American League. During that time frame, Cal has posted a .962 OPS with 11 home runs and 25 RBI across 140 plate appearances, with the 11 homers ranking 2nd-most in the AL.
