SEATTLE -- The Mariners wasted no time getting shortstop Jean Segura back atop their lineup as the 27-year-old shortstop was activated off the 10-day disabled list in time to face the Tigers in Wednesday night's game at Safeco Field and went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in Seattle's 7-4 victory.
Segura singled and scored in the Mariners' three-run sixth inning after they finally broke up a perfect game by Justin Verlander and then walked and scored in the go-ahead, four-run seventh.
"I know he's not 100 percent. You can see that," said manager Scott Servais. "But his timing will get better in the batter's box. He hasn't played in three weeks, but it's great to have him back in there."
Center fielder Jarrod Dyson said it was nice to have the full lineup finally together again after Mitch Haniger and now Segura have returned.
"We've got a tough lineup and it's good to have Jean back on top there," Dyson said. "Unfortunately we've lost him twice this year. But I'm glad to see him back in there. We've got a deep lineup and when we're rolling, we can roll. It was good to see it all come together and get the pitching and hitting at the same time."
Segura went 1-for-5 with a run scored while playing nine innings in Tuesday's game in Tacoma and was deemed ready to return after missing 18 games with a sprained right ankle.
Infielder Tyler Smith was optioned back to Tacoma to open a roster spot for Segura, who has hit .341 in 43 games in his first season with Seattle. Smith hit .188 (3-for-16) with a double and an RBI in 10 games.
"Jean came in today and we talked about maybe giving him a day off today, but he came out of the game really good last night," Servais said prior to Wednesday's game. "He said 'I'm ready to play.' I'm excited about having him in there. He's probably not quite 100 percent yet. I don't think that was going to happen whether he had a day off or not, but he feels good, physically. He ran the bases fine yesterday so we'll get him in there."
