KANSAS CITY -- Mariners utility man Shawn O'Malley, who has been recovering from surgery on his right shoulder since Spring Training, was activated off the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday.
The move puts O'Malley back on the Mariners' 40-man roster. To open a roster spot, right-handed pitcher Christian Bergman cleared waivers and was outrighted to Tacoma, which means he's no longer on the 40-man, but remains with the Rainiers.
O'Malley played his first rehab game with Tacoma on Thursday and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a 10-4 loss to Memphis. The 29-year-old previously played eight rehab games for Double-A Arkansas, where he started out going 1-for-19 before a 6-for-9 finish raised his average to .250 with one home run and three RBIs. He also hit .385 (5-for-13) in five games for the Rookie-level Arizona League Mariners.
The Kennewick, Wash., native played in 89 games for Seattle last season, hitting .229/.299/.319 with two homers and 17 RBIs while starting games at second, short and third base as well as all three outfield positions.

Bergman has spent most of the season with Tacoma, but the 29-year-old also appeared in nine games (eight starts) for Seattle, going 4-4 with a 5.44 ERA. He is 8-3 with a 5.10 ERA in 13 starts with Tacoma.
