LOS ANGELES -- Former All-Star shortstop Cesar Izturis reports from Venezuela that his son, Cesar Izturis Jr., has signed with the Mariners as an international free agent.
The Mariners have not announced a deal.
The younger Izturis, 16, plays the same position as his father did with the Dodgers, when Cesar Sr. was a Gold Glove shortstop in 2004 and an All-Star in 2005. Izturis played with 10 teams over a career that spanned 13 seasons.
The elder Izturis, who was also 16 when he was signed by scout Emilio Carrasquel with Toronto, now is involved in a baseball academy in his native Venezuela, having retired after the 2013 season, his 13th in the Major Leagues. Carrasquel now works for the Mariners and brought in Cesar Jr.
The senior Izturis is the only Dodgers Gold Glove shortstop since Maury Wills in 1962.
