Mariners call up Adams, option Altavilla

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

• Austin Adams, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.

• Dan Altavilla, RHP, optioned to AA Arkansas (postgame May 12).

Adams (#63) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game versus the Oakland Athletics at T-Mobile Park. The Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40 players.

Adams, 28, was acquired from Washington on May 4 after being designated for assignment by the Nationals on April 30. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on that day. Adams appeared in 2 games in relief with the Rainiers, allowing 1 hit and striking out 4 over 2.1 scoreless innings. He appeared in 1 game in relief with the Nationals on April 20 at Miami (1.0 IP, 1 ER) during a brief 3-game Major League stint, April 19-22. The 6-for-3, 210-pound, right-handed reliever, began the season with Triple-A Fresno, appearing in 8 games in relief. Overall he went 0-1 with 1 save and a 2.70 ERA (3 ER, 10.0 IP) at AAA. He has limited opponents to a .189 (7x37) average, while walking 3 and striking out 20.

Adams was originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 8th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Florida. He was traded to Washington from Los Angeles in exchange for INF Danny Espinosa on Dec. 10, 2016. Adams made his Major League debut with the Nationals on July 15, 2017 at Cincinnati and in parts of 3 Major League seasons with Washington, he went 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA (3 ER, 7.0 IP) in 9 relief appearances. In 8 minor league seasons with Los Angeles-AL (2012-16), Washington (2017-19) and Seattle, Adams is 15-14 with 26 saves and a 3.38 ERA (126 ERA, 336.0 IP) in 261 relief appearances.

Altavilla, 27, was recalled prior to yesterday’s game in Boston, and tossed 0.1 inning, allowing 3 earned runs on 1 hit and 4 walks. He began the season on the Mariners Opening Day roster, appearing in 1 game in Japan (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB). He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on March 23 when Seattle’s roster was cut to 25 players. He appeared in 5 games with the Rainiers (0-0, 11.57), allowing 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work prior to being moved to AA Arkansas. With the Travelers, he was 1-0 with 2 saves and a perfect 0.00 ERA. In 7.2 innings pitched, he allowed just 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 10.

In parts of 4 Major League seasons (2016-2019) with the Mariners, Altavilla is 4-3, 3.59 (32 ER, 80.1 IP) in 80 games, all in relief. In 2018, he was 3-2 with 5 holds and a 2.61 ERA (6 ER, 20.2 IP) with 23 strikeouts and 15 walks in 22 games. He had a pair of injured list stints, May 1-12 and June 8-Aug. 29.
